What is a Psychiatric Evaluation

At Hope Valley, a psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive clinical assessment conducted by a licensed psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. It is one of the first steps in understanding a Veteran or active-duty service member’s mental health, substance use history, trauma background, and medication needs.

The evaluation helps our clinical team create a personalized treatment plan that may include trauma-informed therapies, medication management, and evidence-based curricula – all tailored to the unique experiences of military life.

At Hope Valley, every evaluation is conducted in a confidential, respectful environment by staff who understand military culture and the invisible wounds of service.

Benefits of a Psychiatric Evaluation

Why a Proper Psychiatric Evaluation Matters

Mental health conditions among Veterans and active-duty service members are significantly underdiagnosed. An estimated 1 in 5 Veterans experience PTSD, depression, or a related condition, yet many go without a formal evaluation or proper diagnosis for years after separation from service.

Co-occurring disorders – where mental health conditions and substance use disorders exist together – are especially common in the military population. Without a thorough psychiatric evaluation, these conditions can be missed, leading to treatment that addresses only part of the picture and increasing the risk of relapse.

A structured evaluation identifies all active diagnoses, medication interactions, trauma history, and risk factors so that care can begin with a complete, accurate foundation.

Benefits of a Psychiatric Evaluation at Hope Valley

  • Accurate diagnosis of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
  • Identification of trauma history and PTSD symptoms often linked to combat or MST
  • Safe, evidence-informed medication management tailored to each individual
  • Establishes a clinical baseline that guides the entire treatment plan
  • Reduces risk of misdiagnosis or untreated dual-diagnosis conditions
  • Supports long-term recovery and successful community reintegration

At Hope Valley, the psychiatric evaluation is not a checkbox – it is the cornerstone of a care plan built specifically for those who have served.

Evidence-Based Assessment

What Does a Psychiatric Evaluation Include

A psychiatric evaluation at Hope Valley goes beyond a simple intake questionnaire. Our licensed clinicians conduct a thorough, structured assessment that examines the full spectrum of a client’s mental, emotional, and behavioral health.

Areas Assessed During Evaluation:
Presenting symptoms, mental health history, trauma exposure (including combat, MST, and deployment-related stress), substance use history, medical history and current medications, family psychiatric history, cognitive functioning, risk assessment (including suicidality and self-harm), and social and occupational functioning.

Diagnostic Tools Used:
Our team uses validated, evidence-based screening instruments including the PCL-5 (PTSD Checklist), PHQ-9 (depression), GAD-7 (anxiety), AUDIT-C (alcohol use), DAST-10 (drug use), and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), among others — each chosen for their relevance to Veterans and military populations.

Findings are used to develop an individualized treatment plan incorporating therapies such as EMDR, ART, Seeking Safety, Helping Men Recover, Helping Women Recover, and Contingency Management.

FAQs

Hope Valley Health & Wellness Psychiatric Evaluation FAQs

A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive clinical interview and assessment performed by a licensed psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. It explores mental health symptoms, trauma history, substance use, medical background, and overall functioning to establish diagnoses and guide treatment.

At Hope Valley, every evaluation is trauma-informed and designed around the specific experiences of Veterans and active-duty service members - including combat exposure, moral injury, and military sexual trauma (MST).

Why Evaluation Comes First

  • Accurate Diagnosis - identifies all co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions.
  • Medication Safety - reviews current medications and history to prevent harmful interactions.
  • Personalized Care - findings directly shape your individualized treatment plan.
  • Risk Assessment - ensures immediate safety needs are addressed from day one.

Hope Valley conducts evaluations as part of the admissions process so that clinical care begins with a complete and accurate picture of each client's needs.

An initial psychiatric evaluation typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of a client's history. Follow-up evaluations and medication management appointments are shorter and scheduled as clinically indicated throughout treatment.

Hope Valley schedules evaluations at admission and at key clinical milestones, ensuring that the treatment plan evolves alongside each Veteran’s progress.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events — including combat, sexual trauma, accidents, or other life-threatening situations. Symptoms include intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, and avoidance behaviors.

During a psychiatric evaluation, clinicians use validated tools such as the PCL-5 (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5) alongside a structured clinical interview to assess for PTSD and trauma-related conditions. Veterans with PTSD often also have co-occurring substance use disorders, depression, or anxiety — all of which are identified and addressed in Hope Valley’s treatment planning.

A dual diagnosis -  also called a co-occurring disorder - means that a person has both a mental health condition (such as PTSD, depression, or anxiety) and a substance use disorder at the same time. This is extremely common among Veterans: research shows that more than half of Veterans seeking substance use treatment also have a diagnosable mental health condition.

Yes - a thorough psychiatric evaluation is specifically designed to identify dual diagnoses. At Hope Valley, identifying co-occurring conditions is central to how we build treatment plans, ensuring both conditions are treated simultaneously rather than one at a time.

FAQs

How Can I Pay for Treatment?

Many alcohol and drug rehab centers advertise that “insurance is accepted,” but the fine print often reveals you must bill your insurance yourself. This means they are not preferred providers, leaving you responsible for the full cost upfront - a major risk when facing tens of thousands in expenses during early recovery.
At Hope Valley, we make payment simple and secure for veterans and active-duty military:
VA Direct Referral
Most veterans come directly from the VA. We'll handle your referral and authorization.
TriWest / Self-Pay Welcome
All veterans accepted via TriWest or self-pay - 100% coverage, zero out-of-pocket.

TRICARE accepted for active-duty clients. Seamless verification.

At Hope Valley, there is no fine print when we say your coverage is accepted. We verify benefits for veterans and active-duty military, telling you exactly what out-of-pocket expenses to expect during pre-admission.

We never charge more than your copay or deductible for covered services and maximize authorizations from TriWest or TRICARE.

Billing your insurance is handled entirely by us, so you can focus on recovery. In most cases TriWest/Tricare cover up to 100% of costs with zero out-of-pocket. Call Us Now for a confidential verification and begin your journey today.
