Veterans & Active Duty Members

Welcome to Hope Valley

Treatment Built for Veterans & Active Duty Service Members

Hope Valley Health & Wellness provides one of the few residential treatment programs in Alaska specifically for Veterans and active-duty service members. Our clients live together and progress through treatment as a united group – a setup that reflects the bonds of military service and builds the trust necessary for genuine healing.

Our clinical and leadership team mainly consists of Veterans with healthcare experience, many of whom have faced their own challenges with substance use, trauma, and adjusting to civilian life. They don’t just understand military culture – they’ve experienced it firsthand.

We deliver specialized, trauma-informed care that addresses the unique struggles of service: combat-related PTSD, moral injury, military sexual trauma (MST), chronic pain, substance use issues, and the tough challenges of reintegration. From evidence-based trauma therapies to weekly holistic wellness activities with our Battle Dawgs partners, each part of our program is crafted with Veterans and service members in mind.

Jared Geleney: Director Of Operations

Jared Geleney is a proven leader with 27 years of distinguished service in the United States Army. An Infantryman by trade, he deployed to combat four times—three tours in Iraq, including the initial invasion, and one in Afghanistan - demonstrating unwavering commitment and resilience under the most demanding conditions. Since retiring from active duty, Jared has continued his mission of service by supporting fellow Veterans in the field of behavioral health and substance use recovery. Over the past four years, he has worked closely with Veterans as a Group Facilitator, helping them build the skills and behaviors essential for lasting recovery. Drawing on the leadership and operational expertise developed throughout his nearly three-decade military career, he has also served effectively as a Director of Operations.

Understanding the Unique Needs of Veterans & Active Duty Service Members

Veterans and active-duty service members face unique mental health and substance use challenges that civilian treatment programs often struggle to address. Experiences like combat, moral injury, military sexual trauma, and chronic pain from injuries, along with the pressure of multiple deployments, create a complex set of issues that need specialized care.

Studies show that Veterans are more likely to experience PTSD, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and substance use disorders, often dealing with multiple issues at the same time. Treatment programs that only focus on addiction or just mental health are not sufficient. At Hope Valley, we treat the whole person, using trauma-informed care together with evidence-based substance use treatment from the very start.

How We Help

Hope Valley’s program for Veterans and active-duty service members is built around the principles of unit cohesion, peer trust, and shared experience – the same values that define military service. Key features of our program include:

Cohesive Peer Community

Clients reside and move through treatment together, building the kind of trust and camaraderie that opens the door to honest, lasting healing. Sharing the experience with fellow Veterans and service members removes the isolation that so often accompanies trauma and addiction.

Veteran-Led Clinical Staff

Our clinical team includes master’s level therapists, psychiatrists, and support staff who are predominantly Veterans themselves. They bring cultural competence, personal insight, and professional expertise to every aspect of care.

Gender-Separate, Private Residential Setting

Men and women are housed in separate facilities on 2 private acres in Wasilla, Alaska – with a maximum of 6 residents per home. This small, intimate environment ensures individualized attention and a safe space for both men and women to heal.

Battle Dawgs Holistic Wellness Partnership

Every week, our clients participate in immersive wellness activities through our partnership with Battle Dawgs, a Veterans wellness program offering a range of holistic healing experiences. These sessions complement clinical treatment by building physical wellbeing, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Therapeutic Approaches

Our program utilizes a combination of evidence-based trauma therapies and holistic wellness practices to treat the psychological, physical, and spiritual needs of Veterans and service members. The incorporation of these practices allows for the creation of an environment that encourages healing and allows those who have served our country to experience a more profound and lasting recovery from their service.

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): A fast-acting, evidence-based therapy that helps clients rapidly reprocess traumatic memories and reduce distressing symptoms, often showing results in as few as 1 to 5 sessions.
  • Electromagnetic Brain Pulsing (EMBP): Widely used and clinically validated for combat PTSD, EMBP helps clients process and integrate traumatic memories so they no longer drive emotional distress or substance use.
  • Seeking Safety: A trauma-informed, present-focused curriculum that helps clients establish safety in relationships, thinking, behavior, and emotions — particularly effective for co-occurring PTSD and substance use.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps identify and shift negative thought patterns that drive addictive behavior and emotional distress.
  • Contingency Management: A structured behavioral approach that reinforces positive recovery behaviors and builds motivation for sustained sobriety.
  • Helping Men Recover: A gender-responsive, trauma-informed curriculum designed specifically for men, addressing the social and cultural factors that contribute to addiction and hinder recovery.
  • Helping Women Recover: A strengths-based, trauma-informed curriculum tailored to the unique experiences of women - including military sexual trauma, relational trauma, and the intersection of addiction and mental health.

Through our weekly partnership with Battle Dawgs, clients engage in a range of holistic and experiential wellness activities designed to support healing of the mind, body, and spirit. These immersive sessions are facilitated by Veterans wellness professionals and provide a powerful complement to clinical treatment. Visit the Battle Dawgs website for the full scope of services they offer.

Hope Valley's residential facilities are newly constructed homes set on 2 private acres in Wasilla, Alaska. Men's and women's programs are housed in separate buildings, with a maximum of 6 residents per home. The private, rural setting provides a calm and structured environment that supports focused recovery. Phase 2 construction - including expanded amenities - is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Hope Valley accepts TRICARE and TriWest, the primary insurance plans covering the majority of Veterans and active-duty service members. We also accept self-pay. We do not currently accept other commercial insurance plans. Our admissions team handles all insurance verification on your behalf - so you know exactly what your out-of-pocket costs will be before treatment begins, with no surprises.

Recovery is a lifelong commitment, and Hope Valley supports clients long after they leave our doors. Our alumni program includes peer connection, ongoing community engagement, and a workforce development component specifically designed to help Veterans and service members reintegrate into meaningful careers and civilian life. We believe that purpose, employment, and community are cornerstones of lasting recovery.

Why Are Veterans & Service Members a Vulnerable Population?

Veterans and active-duty service members exhibit a unique set of stressors and experiences that place them at significantly elevated risk of developing mental health disorders, as well as substance use disorders. Understanding these factors is central to Hope Valley’s approach to treatment:

Exposure to combat, life-threatening situations, and the death of fellow service members can produce lasting psychological wounds. Repeated deployments compound this trauma, leading to:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Moral injury — the distress of acting against one's own moral code or witnessing others do so
  • Hypervigilance and chronic anxiety
  • Emotional numbing and social withdrawal
  • Substance use as a coping mechanism

Military sexual trauma is a significant and underreported issue affecting both men and women in the military. MST is strongly associated with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Hope Valley's gender-separate, trauma-informed environment is designed to provide a safe and supportive space for survivors of MST to begin healing.

Military culture often promotes a "mission first, self last" mentality that can make it deeply difficult to acknowledge vulnerability or ask for help. This leads to:

  • Fear of appearing weak or unfit for duty
  • Avoidance of mental health services due to career concerns
  • Years of untreated trauma and substance use before seeking help

At Hope Valley, our Veteran-led team understands this culture firsthand — and creates an environment where seeking help is reframed as strength, not weakness.

Leaving military service can be profoundly disorienting. Loss of unit cohesion, purpose, structure, and identity are common — and can contribute to depression, isolation, and substance use. Veterans may also face difficulty finding employment, navigating VA systems, or reconnecting with family. Hope Valley's alumni and workforce development program directly addresses this transition, providing the tools and community needed to build a meaningful civilian life.

The majority of Veterans entering addiction treatment also carry a diagnosable mental health condition. PTSD, depression, anxiety, and TBI frequently co-occur with substance use disorders — and treating only one condition dramatically increases the risk of relapse. Hope Valley specializes in integrated dual diagnosis treatment, ensuring both conditions are addressed simultaneously from the first day of care.

Service-related injuries are a leading driver of opioid and prescription drug dependence among Veterans. Pain management that begins with legitimate medical prescriptions can escalate into dependence, often intertwined with untreated PTSD and depression. Hope Valley's integrated approach addresses both the physical and psychological dimensions of pain-related substance use through MAT, trauma therapy, and holistic wellness practices.

FAQs

How Can I Pay for Treatment?

Many alcohol and drug rehab centers advertise that “insurance is accepted,” but the fine print often reveals you must bill your insurance yourself. This means they are not preferred providers, leaving you responsible for the full cost upfront - a major risk when facing tens of thousands in expenses during early recovery.
At Hope Valley, we make payment simple and secure for veterans and active-duty military:
VA Direct Referral
Most veterans come directly from the VA. We'll handle your referral and authorization.
TriWest / Self-Pay Welcome
All veterans accepted via TriWest or self-pay - 100% coverage, zero out-of-pocket.
Active Duty TRICARE
TRICARE accepted for active-duty clients. Seamless verification.

At Hope Valley, there is no fine print when we say your coverage is accepted. We verify your benefits for veterans and active-duty military personnel and let you know exactly what to expect in terms of out-of-pocket costs before your admission.

We never charge you more than your copay or your deductible for the services provided. We maximize the authorizations from TriWest or TRICARE.

We handle all the billing with your insurance company so you can focus on your recovery. In most cases, TriWest/Tricare will pay up to 100% of your costs with zero out-of-pocket costs for you. Call Us Now for a confidential verification and begin your journey today.
