Mental Health Treatment in Alaska

Military service changes people. The experiences, the pressures, and the moral weight of the decisions made in circumstances of impossibility all remain with the person even once that individual no longer wears the uniform. For many Veterans and even active-duty members, the invisible wounds of military service continue to impact their lives well after their deployments have come to an end.

Hope Valley Health & Wellness provides residential mental health treatment in Alaska built specifically for veterans and active-duty service members. Our program in Wasilla treats PTSD, depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occurring substance use together, under one roof, through TRICARE and TriWest. For most veterans, that coverage means little to no out-of-pocket cost, and our admissions team verifies your exact benefits for you at no charge.

Residential Mental Health Treatment Built for Veterans

Mental health challenges rarely arrive one at a time. Most veterans who come to us are carrying several at once: trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, and often substance use layered on top. Treating any one of those in isolation tends to fail, because the others pull recovery back down.

Hope Valley was built to treat the whole picture. From the moment you arrive at our new-construction residential homes on a private, two-acre campus in Wasilla, you are surrounded by a small community of fellow veterans who understand the language, culture, and experiences that shaped you. With a 5-to-1 client-to-clinician ratio, care here is never generic. It is designed for you.

Starting Your Journey

Mental Health Conditions We Treat

Our clinical team treats the full range of mental health conditions veterans face, and treats them alongside any substance use rather than separately:

PTSD is one of the most common and disabling mental health conditions among veterans that impacts Veterans and active duty service members alike.

At Hope Valley Wellness, we focus on providing treatment specifically for those with PTSD. We use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), one of the most clinically validated and evidence-based trauma therapies to help those with PTSD reprocess their traumatic memories to permanently reduce the emotional impact of those memories. Many of our clients experience relief from their PTSD symptoms after just a few sessions.

In veterans, depression often looks like anger, numbness, or overwork rather than sadness. Depression is a clinical condition with neurological roots that many Veterans and active duty members suffer from. Symptoms such as combat hypervigilance, isolation during deployments, challenges in adjusting to life after service as well as the culture of 'toughing it out' all contribute to the development of this condition.

We treat it with evidence-based therapy, medication management when appropriate, and the structure and connection that recovery depends on.

Hypervigilance that will not stand down, panic, and avoidance that shrinks daily life. We treat anxiety with non-addictive, proven approaches rather than the benzodiazepines that so often become a second problem.

When a mental health condition and substance use occur together. This is the rule, not the exception, for veterans in treatment, and it is where our program is strongest.

Learn More about Co-occurring Disorder Treatment

Co-Occurring Disorders and Dual Diagnosis

When a mental health condition and a substance use disorder occur together, the clinical term is dual diagnosis. Alcohol quiets the nightmares. Opioids dull physical and emotional pain. Stimulants restore the energy depression takes away. Substances become a form of self-medication, and over time, a disorder of their own.

The evidence is consistent, and it shapes everything we do:

  • Roughly half of veterans diagnosed with PTSD also meet the criteria for a substance use disorder.
  • Veterans are significantly more likely than civilians to experience depression, anxiety, and PTSD alongside alcohol or drug dependence.
  • Left untreated, or treated in isolation, co-occurring disorders sharply raise the risk of relapse, hospitalization, and suicide.

Treating only the addiction without the mental health condition driving it is one of the main reasons relapse happens. At Hope Valley, every client receives simultaneous, integrated treatment for both, never one at the expense of the other. Our evidence-based curricula, including Helping Men Recover, Helping Women Recover, Seeking Safety, and contingency management, are designed for exactly this intersection. For more on how this works, see our dual diagnosis program.

What Sets Us Apart

Our Integrated, Trauma-Informed Approach

Hope Valley takes a trauma-informed, evidence-based, whole-person approach. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, our clinical team, made up largely of veterans with healthcare experience, builds individualized plans that address every dimension of wellbeing: psychological, physical, social, and spiritual.

Treatment draws on proven therapies including ART, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Seeking Safety, alongside experiential care and daily physical activity. Our gender-separate homes hold no more than six residents each, creating the trust and safety that meaningful recovery is built on.

Does TRICARE Cover Mental Health Treatment in Alaska?

For most veterans and active-duty service members, yes. Hope Valley works through TRICARE and TriWest, and most clients pay little to nothing out of pocket for covered care. Our admissions team confirms your exact benefits and tells you any out-of-pocket amount before admission, at no charge.

See our veterans and active duty page for how coverage and admission work, including for those traveling from outside Alaska.
